Department introduction |
|
The Department of Orthopedic Surgery was founded 55 years ago in April 1951 when Dr. Kohzo Satoh assumed the post of assistant professor. Director Shinichi Kikuchi served as the fifth professor, and Director Shinichi Konno is the sixth professor. At present, all staff members are actively conducting research on clinical medicine and education. The department has produced positive results under the guidance of Director Kikuchi and Professor Konno who have led the department with a global perspective.
At present (April 2009), there are a total of 67 staff members, including directors. At the university, there are 33 staff members below the directors (including one person overseas), and the remaining 34 are undergoing training at affiliated hospitals. At the university, there are 20 staff members above the assistant professors, 4 fourth-sixth year residents and 6 graduate students.

Research activities |
|
Many patients who visit the Department of Orthopedic Surgery complain of pain. Therefore, our main focus is on the "onset mechanism of pain". At the department, our past basic studies on compression neuropathy of the cauda equina or nerve roots yielded significant findings. With regards to radiculopathy due to intervertebral disc hernia, research is currently being conducted on radiculopathy caused by chemical factors. |

Educational activities |
|
1. |
Student education |
|
Students and staff work one-on-one for bedside learning (BSL). The aim of our education system is for students and instructors to be together from morning to night so that students can learn about orthopedic diseases, interact with patients and experience how doctors live their lives. |
2. |
Postgraduate education |
|
After the end of postgraduate clinical training, orthopedic surgery training is provided for residents. At the university hospital, residents become part of ward teams and train under the guidance of specialists to mainly learn about chronic diseases. At collaborating hospitals, residents primarily learn about the diagnosis and treatment of acute diseases under the guidance of specialists, including department managers. |
