Clinical works
Our department of internal medicine aims to take
a general human medical care, and also to specialize
in cardiology, hematology and gastroenterology.
In cardiology, in addition to the routine cardiac
catheterization including intravascular ultrasound
(IVUS) observation, assessment of coronary microvascular
function using flow and pressure wire methods
has been performed if applicable. Emergency catheterization
for recanalization by percutaneous translumenal
coronary recanalization (PTCR) or angioplasty
(PTCA) and stenting, and coronary intervention
to chronic total occlusion have been performed
in ischemic patients. In patients with refractory
tachyarrhythmia, new therapeutic strategies such
as catheter ablation and implantation of the intracardiac
defibrillator (ICD) have also been performed if
applicable.
In hematology, bone marrow and peripheral blood
stem cell transplantation have been applied to
indicative cases in a clean room.
In gastroenterology, in addition to routine diagnostic
and therapeutic tools, emergency endoscopy for
hemorrhagic disease, angiography for diagnosis
or management of various disease states including
tumors and embolic therapy to hepatoma have been
performed. |

Research |
|
We have extensive activities to the clinical
and basic research especially in cardiology, hematology
and gastroenterology. Laboratory research includes
in vivo (pigs, dogs, rats and mice) and in vitro
pharmacologic, biochemical and molecular biologic
studies especially in the areas of atherosclerosis,
heart failure, coronary microcirculatory dysfunction
and arrhythmia, and hematologic disorder such
as paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. We have
so far 133 publications (1989-2001) as full papers
in English journals including Circulation,
Circ Res, J Am Coll Cardiol and Blood. These
publications (excluding abstracts) are listed
below. |

Education |
|
To acquire medical care techniques and acknowledgements,
philosophy and experience as general physicians,
we educate new doctors by our training protocols
in man-to-man system for the first year. Doctors
take care of patients as general physicians and
also experience new therapeutic technology as
mentioned above according to the instruction by
senior specialized doctors. After this training,
medical training is continued in branch hospitals
usually for 2 years. Then, doctors choose basic
or clinical research program in advanced course
of the training protocol in our department. |
