Introduction |
|
The Fukushima Medical University Department
of Urology was established in 1968. Emeritus Professor
Kazuhide Kuroda, who was the first chair of our
department laid the foundation of urology in Fukushima
Medical University. From 1973, Emeritus Professor
Yasuo Shiraiwa presided over our department for
23 years. In the period of this 23 years, enormous
prosperity was achieved in clinical, investigational
and educational respect, accompanied by the increase
of our medical staff. In 1996, Assistant Professor,
now Professor, Osamu Yamaguchi took office as
the chair of the department. At present, we have
eight faculty members besides 32 residents in
the university hospital and twelve affiliated
hospitals. |

Research |
|
We have four main frames of clinical work, renal
transplantation, voiding dysfunction, surgical
and conservative treatment for urinary incontinence
and less invasive surgical treatment, which are
deeply related to improvement of quality of life.
Our members are also continuing clinical research
in pediatric urology, urinary tract obstruction
and female urology.
We are also involved in basic research projects
directly connected to clinical issues, for example,
elucidation of pathogenesis of detrusor instability
and metastasis of bladder cancer, using pharmacological
and molecular biological techniques. |
|
Education |
|
We have a well-established educational system
for residents, graduates and medical students.
Through a five-year resident educational course,
residents receive qualification as a certified
urologist. For resident's desiring an advanced
degree, we maintain a close relationship with
the basic medical department. |
